Before

Alim Umatiya studied finance at the University of Houston's Bauer College, and graduated in 2022. That November he enlisted in the Air Force.

The record does not hold his reason for enlisting. What he has said is a fact about the community rather than a motive for the man: he is one of the few Ismailis who have served in the United States armed forces.

Men enlist for reasons a page can rarely carry — a family that served, a green card, a war on the television, a recruiter who called at the right moment. His is not on the record, and the record does not supply one.

Service

He was a systems technician with the 27th Special Operations Wing at Cannon Air Force Base, in eastern New Mexico, and he was assigned to its munitions squadron.

The job was the information side of the ammunition account. A munitions squadron holds a stock that is serialised, stored across several facilities, and signed for at every move; the systems he ran are the ones that keep that record straight — what is held, where it sits, and who is accountable for it — and that support the flightline when it draws from the stock. In a special operations wing the account is expensive and moves constantly, so the ledger is not paperwork around the work. It is the work.

He separated in November 2023.

After

He went into real estate finance in Houston. From January 2024 to August 2026 he was financial controller at MAML Management, running the finances of a private commercial real estate portfolio: multi-year models for acquisition, hold and refinance decisions, and the entity work that sits under them.

In August 2026 he started the full-time MBA at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business. He is in the class of 2028.

He lives in Richmond, Texas. He serves on the national marketing team of the Ismaili Students Network USA, as a communications member with The Ismaili, and as a marketing specialist with Jubilee Monuments Corp.

And he answers the questions. Ismailis considering the service find him, and he takes them — which is, more or less, why this record exists.

Context

The munitions account

A munitions account is a ledger before it is a stockpile. Every bomb, round and cartridge a squadron holds is serialised and signed for, and the unit's custody records have to reconcile against the physical stock at any moment — which is why a 100% inventory is an event with a date and a count, not a routine. The systems that hold that ledger are the ones a systems technician runs: the database of what is stored where, the transactions that move an item from one bunker or one custodian to another, and the reports that have to agree with what an inspector counts by hand. In a special operations wing the inventory is small, expensive and constantly moving to the flightline, so the record is the part that cannot lag.

Context

Cannon

Cannon Air Force Base sits outside Clovis, in eastern New Mexico, on the high plains — flat, dry, windy, and a long way from anywhere. The 27th Special Operations Wing arrived in 2007 and flies the wing's gunships, transports and remotely piloted aircraft for Air Force Special Operations Command; the MQ-9 Reaper is the aircraft most associated with the base. A munitions squadron there supports a flightline that is busy at night.
