Before
Adnan Amir Ali was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and grew up in Bombay. He came to the United States in 2014 on a student visa.
He studied here, and stayed. In 2021 he got his green card.
A friend told him to join the Army — that the service would put him on the road to citizenship. It does: a service member can naturalize under a provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act that exists for exactly this, and thousands do every year. He took the advice.
Service
He went to basic training at Fort Jackson, in Columbia, South Carolina. It is the Army's largest basic training post, and most of the soldiers the Army has made in the last generation were made there.
Then Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia — Fort Lee, until it was renamed in 2023 — where the Army keeps the Quartermaster School. He trained as a water treatment specialist, 92W.
The job is the Army's own water supply. A field army cannot drink from a municipal main; it purifies what is in front of it. He learned to run the reverse osmosis units, to site a water point, and to test what came out of it — because water that looks clean and is not will take a battalion off the line faster than anything the enemy does.
His duty station was Fort Bliss, in El Paso, Texas: the 142nd Division Sustainment Support Battalion, under the 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade. The battalion is a logistics headquarters, and what it sustains is an armored division — its supply, its transport, its maintenance, its field services. His trade sat inside that: the water an armored division drinks in the desert it trains in.
He served four years and eleven months, and separated in 2025.
After
He lives in Richmond, Texas, southwest of Houston.
He married in 2023; his wife is from Pakistan. Their son was born in 2025, and Adnan is at home with him.
Asked what he wants his son to know about his service, he did not talk about the units. He said he wants him to know the struggles, and the benefits that came after them — the GI Bill, the medical care.
He volunteers at the Ismaili Center in Houston, on the transport side for events. This fall he raised about forty-seven thousand dollars for the Aga Khan Foundation through a walkathon.
In five years he did not meet another Ismaili in uniform.

The water
The Army's water problem is arithmetic. A soldier in the field needs several gallons a day for drinking, hygiene and food service, and a division needs hundreds of thousands of gallons a week — more than any supply line can truck in from a town main. So the Army makes its own. The reverse osmosis water purification unit takes raw water from a river, a canal or a well and pushes it through filters and a membrane until it meets the standard for drinking water. A water treatment specialist sites the unit, runs it, tests the product for chlorine, pH and turbidity, and lays out the water point a unit draws from. The trade is plumbing, chemistry and preventive medicine at once, and a bad batch does not fail quietly. Fort Gregg-Adams, the Army's Quartermaster School, is where the Army teaches it.
Atlas
The 142nd Division Sustainment Support Battalion is at Fort Bliss, Texas, and belongs to the 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade. Its nickname is Atlas and its motto is 'Support For Strength'. A division sustainment support battalion is a headquarters for logistics: it takes command of up to six company-sized units — supply, transport, maintenance, field services — and runs them for a division, or for units passing through its area. The 142nd is old. It was constituted in January 1944 as a quartermaster battalion, served in Korea, moved to Fort Bliss in 2009, and in October 2021 uncased new guidons as a division sustainment support battalion, its companies redesignated around it.
