Third Generation
The third generation runs from 2001 to 2009. After September 2001 the services were asked for intelligence, signals, civil affairs, medical support and logistics as much as for combat arms. Guard and Reserve units were mobilized for years rather than for annual training, Army tours lengthened, and the Navy and Air Force supplied the airlift, surveillance and staffs that the ground war ran on.
