Second Generation

The second generation runs from 1990 to 2000: it opens with the Gulf War and closes with a force about a third smaller. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, and the services spent the decade cutting divisions, ships, squadrons and bases. What remained deployed more often in smaller numbers — to Somalia, the Balkans and the Gulf — and reserve units were called up alongside it.
